Visiting patients
At Tōtara Hospice we encourage whānau and friends to visit patients and do our best to ensure all patients and whānau feel comfortable and safe during their stay
Visitor information
The well-being, health, and safety of all our patients, their whānau, our workforce, visitors, and communities continue to be of paramount importance to us. The Inpatient Unit can support up to 12 patients at a time, so with this in mind, we need everyone to help us respect each of our patients’ rights to privacy and safety.
Our patient visiting hours for whānau and friends are between 8 am and 8 pm, 7 days a week at Tōtara Hub.
We politely ask that patients and their whānau share the following visiting guidelines so that everyone has a safe and respectful time in the Inpatient Unit:
- All visitors must sign in and out on the tablet in reception for safety and security reasons
- Children are welcome. However, it is important that they are supervised and cared for by an adult in your visiting group. This is to ensure their safety as well as the privacy and comfort of all patients. Young children cannot move through Tōtara Hub unaccompanied
- Due to the size of our rooms we cannot safely accommodate large groups. The team will of course work with friends and whānau to ensure we can welcome everyone on a rostered basis
- Visiting outside of regular visiting hours will need to be discussed and confirmed with the Inpatient team prior to arrival
Tips for visiting patients
- We encourage visitors to be mindful that patients can get tired very quickly and to ensure they communicate with their whānau/friends to prioritise the patients' wellbeing
- Patients have the right to choose who can visit them. Our staff will always respect the patients’ choice, as should any visitors that are asked to not visit or if a patient is not feeling up to visits at a specific time/day. There may be some exceptions to these; we are happy to discuss them with you on an individual basis
- We have plenty of onsite parking in both our upper and lower carparks; both are accessed from Charles Prevost Drive
- We have an onsite kitchenette open to all patient visitors
- We also have an onsite cafe open on weekdays - Click here to find out more
