Takanini Hospice Shop Temporary Closure Due To Fire

Our Takanini Hospice Shop is temporarily closed.

We need your help. After the devastating fire at our Takanini premises, we’re calling on our amazing community to help us rebuild and restock.

Got clothes, kitchenware, or unused goodies from late-night shopping sprees? Clear out your cupboards and donate to your local Tōtara Hospice Shop (Takanini is temporarily closed — you can find other locations here: https://hospice.co.nz/shop-with-purpose/).

We’re also going to need to rebuild our distribution centre and would deeply appreciate any support or donations to help us get back on our feet, you can donate here: https://hospice.co.nz/donate

Thank you for standing with us.

Tōtara Hospice Chief Executive Tina McCafferty told RNZ the building, which was their biggest storage area for donations across South and South East Auckland, had been devastated.

“The warehouse has been absolutely wiped out. It is gone. In there is all of our stock that gets donated to us by community members. All of that is gone. There is not a thing left. This is just one more thing we did not need. Over the last couple of months, we have had to reduce patient services, we have made almost 20 percent of our staff redundant, and now we have a significant suspicious fire at one of the arms of our organisation that tries to fill funding gaps.”

Community rallies after hospice centre gutted in blaze – Times Media (Franklin Times and Eastern Times) will be donating $1000 to Hospice and owner Bo Burns is urging all local businesses to please match our donation to help. “If we had 300 businesses donate $1000 each, this will go a long way for our much-loved Tōtara Hospice.”

A temporary donation centre is now open at 42A Ben Lomond Crescent, Pakuranga Heights. Tōtara Hospice welcomes any donations of good-quality clothing and homeware to help replenish what was lost and continue its vital work in the community. Furniture donations are also being accepted, and collection can be arranged by calling 09 297 7550.

“We’re lucky in the fact that we’ve got a resilient staff who are really committed to the work of the hospice. They were devastated that such an important part of our organisation has literally ‘gone up in smoke’. They were upset that it could happen, and that was made worse by the fact that someone could do that.”
